8th Grade Advanced Band
This course will help students develop skills to evaluate music, build self confidence, teamwork, as well as gain an understanding of the historical and cultural perspective of music. Students will perform various styles of music with concentration on sight reading, listening skills, music theory, instrumental independence, and proper tone production in preparation for rehearsal and performances. Advanced Band is a yearlong course. Students will learn all major and minor scales, intervals, chords, composition and learn to play melodies from music notation. Students will also write music with Finale 2010 Music Program. The entire class must participate in the MSBOA Solo & Ensemble Festival as well as Band & Orchestra Festival. This class will perform 3-5 events per school year.
7th Grade Intermediate Band
Intermediate Band is an elective music course for students desiring to perform. The goal is to teach students to become better and more confident singers and to develop an appreciation for instrumental music. Students will perform various styles of music from selected music training books and musical scores appropriate for their skill level with concentration on sight reading skills, music theory, and proper tone production in preparation for rehearsal and performance. Intermediate Band is a yearlong course. Students will explore scales, intervals, chords, composition and learn to play melodies from music notation. Students will also learn how to write music, play solos and ensembles. This class will perform 3-5 events per school year.
Beginning Band
Beginning Band is a year-long course. This course will focus on building and extending musical skills and concepts with an emphasis on musical elements and structure. Students will be introduced to an instrument of their choice and learn techniques that will increase their knowledge of music. Students will learn how to read music, music theory and composition. They will develop musical independence through exploration, practice and performance with hands on activities. This class will perform 2-4 events per school year.
Marching Band
This course is a combination of all three music classes. Students will receive individual and group instruction in a group setting using student section leaders. Students will progress from level to level at their own pace, while learning how to play in a large group setting. The Marching Band will perform 8-10 events per school year. Students must be able to stay after school and maintain a 2.0 G.P.A.
Jazz Band
This course is only open to advanced musicians regardless of grade level. Students must be able to practice after school on Monday and Tuesdays. Students must have a good tone and know how to read music and all major and minor scales. Students will learn how to solo, improvise and compose music. Jazz Band will perform 10 - 15 events per school year. Students must maintain a 2.2 G.P.A
